When we talk about ‘Savoury’ pipe tobacco blends, we’re referencing what are often called either Balkan or English blends in common pipe vernacular. The word ‘savoury’ is a tidy way to lump these together, since they both similarly use small amounts of Virginia tobacco mixed with more spicy, peppery, and/or smoky tobacco varieties like Latakia, Oriental, and Perique.
Oriental tobacco is native to the Mediterranean region between Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria, and is cured and dried under direct sunlight. It maintains a good amount of its natural sugars due to the particular drying process, which makes it a bit sweet, but Oriental is also known to contribute some spicy notes to a blend. Perique is a tobacco grown only in the St James Parish region of Louisiana, and gets its unique pepper and molasses flavours in part because the tobacco is all grown in Magnolia swampland soil in that state.
Latakia is not a tobacco variety, strictly speaking, but rather a curing process. Mostly produced in Cyprus, it is born from bunches of tobacco being cured over pine or oak wood fires. This process both darkens the colour and causes a distinctly peppery and smoky flavour to the tobacco.
So, whereas with sweet blends you will often see tobaccos like Burley and Cavendish, a savoury blend will always have one or more of the three tobaccos listed above, often blended with Virginia to give it balance. A great sweet blend will mimic the experience of drinking a fine liqueur, while a great savoury blend will bring to mind a great aged single malt scotch – covering the palate with smoky, earthy, and peppery notes.

This blend consists of mild Latakia from Cypress and U.S. grown Virginia. Although this blend appeals to experienced pipe smokers, due consideration is given to the mild trends by adding just a touch of Black Brazilian Sun Cured grades. Mild to medium bodied with a great aroma.
