The Diplomaticos brand is made in the same factory as Montecristo, and bears a marked resemblance to that more popular brand. This similarity includes heavy crossover of flavours, and the use of a numbering system to describe its sizes (eg, the #2, the #4, the #5).
In fact, because Diplomaticos were created with the French market in mind, they are often described as a milder version of Montecristo. They tend to impart a silky smoothness in both flavour and texture, much like the other French-centric Cuban cigar brand, the Quai D’Orsay.
Unfortunately, as a Cuban brand of lesser popularity, Diplomaticos has dropped production of several of their vitolas in recent years. Currently, the Diplomaticos #2 is the only size left available. At 6⅛” x 52, it’s the same size as the Montecristo #2, and absolutely worth trying for those who like their Cubans mellow – and exceedingly rare.
All Diplomatico cigars are “Totalmente a mano, tripa larga” – totally hand made, long filler using tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region.
